9 Lingering Questions From Draft Night

Bruno Caboclo – Biggest surprise or worst pick of the draft?

The Toronto Raptors shocked the NBA by drafting a little-known Brazilian player, for the second time. In 2004 Toronto drafted Rafael Araujo with the eight overall pick. Bruno Caboclo was more of a surprising pick even if he was taken 20th overall. Caboclo is the youngest player in the draft and doesn’t turn 19 years old until September.

After Commissioner Adam Silver announced Bruno Caboclo would be heading to Toronto the Barclays Center became silent. Even NBA Draft experts were surprised by the pick and didn’t have any information on him. Bill Simmons yelled, “WHAT JUST HAPPENED??” only seconds after the pick was made. The only person not surprised was Raptors GM Masai Ujiri, but only because he made the selection. Ujiri was initially after Canadian born point guard Tyler Ennis who ultimately went 18th to Phoenix. The price to receive him from Phoenix, or a pick before that one ended up being too high for Ujiri’s liking so he took the second highest player on his board, Caboclo.

Raptors coach Dwane Casey said he recently saw Caboclo working out in Houston. Casey explained that only a handful of teams even knew of Caboclo, but they were worried that he would not make it to their 37th pick. Fran Fraschilla, ESPN’s international prospect evaluator, compared Bruno to a “Brazilian Kevin Durant”, but also said that he is “two years away from being two years away”. Toronto first noticed him at Basketball Without Borders in 2013. A few Raptors scouts watched Caboclo play at a tournament in Brazil in December and told Ujiri to check him out. Ujiri did exactly that as he flew to Brazil three times to watch him play.

Answer: Only time will tell if Bruno Caboclo will be a great NBA player or not, but he was certainly the most mind boggling pick of the 2014 NBA Draft. If Bruno lives up to his nickname “The Brazilian Kevin Durant” than first season GM Masai Ujiri will look like a basketball genius for gambling on this guy.

God does give us weaknesses so we can be hmbule and ask him for help after we tried to gain streghnth on our own. He want’s us to try and not sit back and wait for the blessing to happen. Nice blog topic. I myself need to ask for help more and soften my heart and stop being stubborn thinking I can accomplish something by myself with out any help.
